WHAT IS OXALA?

In the Yoruba Tradition, through the power of the The Supreme Being, Oxalá (or Obàtálá) made the human bodies and The Supreme Being, the Creator, God, Olorun (in Yoruba), breathed life into them.

Oxalá is the oldest of the Orixás. The qualities of Oxalá are humility, calmness, clearness of thought and purity. As a result, it is said that Oxalá was selected by the Creator to govern the ORI, the head, considered the Creator’s greatest creation.

Obàtálá is referred to as the Orixá of the North. He is always dressed in white, hence the meaning of his name, Obàtálá (King or ruler of the white cloth). His worshippers strive to practice moral correctness as unblemished as his robe.

Oxalá (or Obàtálá) is also the force in nature which represents the conscious feeling of doing what is right in a peaceful way. It is here that Oxalá's great power and wisdom becomes most evident.

Oxalá is linked with the color white because white is associated with the idea of the purity of awareness, so one wears white clothes at the Peace Ceremonies. During the ceremony you will learn about Oxalá and learn how to call forth this gentle force of nature to bring peace on earth.

Specific areas of the world are selected to bring peace, along with awakening peace for various people, including your ancestors, yourself, your family and friends.

To call an Orisha the Chief of White Cloth is to make a symbolic reference to that substance which makes consciousness possible....it is a reference to the fabric which binds the universe together.
